“Our World Under The Waves” (https://ourworldunderthewaves.com) is an online blog (powered by WordPress) for publishing articles about the ocean, its habits, inhabitants and our connection to all of the above. All articles are in the public domain and while visitors have the option to subscribe for email alerts, it is not necessary to access any content on this site. Any data collected by Our World Under The Waves is not monetised or used for any trading or marketing purposes.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it
By default, Our World Under The Waves defers to WordPress for the collection of any personal data from visitors to this website. By default, WordPress does not collect any personal data about visitors, and only collects the data shown on the User Profile screen from registered users.
However, personal data may also be generated from technical processes such as contact forms, comments, cookies, analytics, and third party embeds. These will not be used by Our World Under The Waves for marketing purposes.
Contact Forms
When visitors use the dedicated contact forms, data is collected as shown in the form.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site data is collected as shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
Visitors downloading any images from this website should be aware that a creative commons license may be assigned to the image in question. Information about any and all licenses is provided in the “Image Sources” section of each article. Any image be lacking this information is either public domain (and so does not legally require attribution) or was provided by Matthew Norton with no copyright attached.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
Embedded content from other websites

All data collected on Our World Under The Waves will remain within the WordPress system.
The owner does not copy or retain any data on any device or cloud system outside of WordPress.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that subscribe on the website, the personal information they provide is stored in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you subscribe to this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
